Buying A South African Boerboel Puppy

First, consider whether you have the time and commitment to own a large, guarding breed. You will need to spend time socializing your dog and consistent basic training is a must. Boerboels thrive on being part of the family. If you are out all day, it’s probably not the right breed for you.
When selecting a breeder look for somebody who is registered with the SABT or HBSA.

Everybody will have their own priorities but remember that this will be a big, powerful dog and therefore an even temperament is vital. A large component of temperament is inherited.

Always buy from a registered breeder. Compare the parents to the Boerboel Breed Standard. It is recommended that the breeder should be asked if the parents have been tested for Hip Dysplasia; if so ask to see a copy of the results of these tests. Obtain a Birth Certificate for the puppy from the breeder as you will need this if you wish to have your dog appraised and registered.

Obviously all the puppies should be healthy and happy and used to being handled. Research suggests that a lot of important socialization occurs before a puppy is 8 weeks old so the more exposure they have had to a variety of people the better.
Talk to your Chosen breeder about the kind of dog you would like and what you want to do with your dog. They should be able to suggest those puppies whose personality may suit you.
Nobody can predict exactly how a puppy will develop and mature either mentally or physically so be prepared to love them even if they are hopeless as guard dogs or have two left feet!

POINTS TO BEAR IN MIND WHEN BUYING A BOERBOEL PUPPY

·        Be wary of people advertising "Registered Boerboel Puppies" .A puppy is not automatically registered even though both parents are. It can only be registered after it is appraised.

·        Be careful of people advertising "Pedigreed  Boerboel Puppies" as this does not provide any guarantee as to the quality of the puppies, this merely means  that its ancestry has been documented by one of the Boerboel registries the SABT or the HBSA.
